"You Are Responsible For Your Life. So Take Responsibility"
John Duffy
Years ago when I was acting someone stated, "why would you expect your agent to work harder for you than yourself when they get 10% and you get 90%". That statement made a lot of sense and it is true for your life in general. Why would you expect your employer or the government to be more concerned or responsible for your life?
News flash, you are 100% responsible for your life and you are 100% responsible for the results you get or don't get in life. I know that might be tough to swallow and accept but it's the fact Jack. If you truly accept this it is very empowering for your life.......
Take 100% responsibility for;
Your Life
Your Relationships
Your Family
Your Finances
Your Health
Now just Do It............

Whilst it is true that one should be responsible for all you mention regarding one's life there are often circumstances which effect our lives over which we have no control.
Regarding relationships it takes more than just one person to make a relationship work.
We can indeed be responsible for our own health by eating healthy nutritious food, exercising regularly, not smoking, not drinking excessively, avoiding drugs, having regular physical check-ups etc.
However, we can still secumb to cancer and a variety of deceases over which we have no control. This could be due to the very air we breath or a genetic mutation. We can perhaps prolong the quality of our lives and taking responsibility for our own health. I personally do not need to be told what I should and should not eat. I think we all know what is good for us, but do not always have the willpower. May be a little of what you fancy does you good. That means I do drink the occasional glass of wine, or mug of beer. Moderation is the key.
One can bring up ones children to the best of ones ability and teach them ones own life values. That doesn't mean when grown your children will adhere to what you taught them. We are not responsible for what our children do as adults, or come to that matter for other family members actions. My sister who lives in England has been widow for several years and knows she needs to get a smaller home. She asks my advice on a regular basis but to date has not acted on it.She has to make her own decisions.
Finances. Growing up in the UK my family was very thrifty and a great many of the things that people now do in America to save money, I have always done. We can save and make choices in what we do and do not purchase. If suddenly out of the blue you have no job, you will soon find your savings are depleted very quickly and despite a college education you may end up washing dishes in order to just eat.
With regards to ones life, indeed one is responsible for ones own actions but if your are married, you have to take into account your spouse.
Life is not easy, it is a matter of give and take and survival.A lot of money is not necessarily the key to happiness, but the lack of it is key to the opposite.
We are the person we are today because of choices, it is easy to look back and see ones own mistakes it is whether we learn from them.
We are never too old to learn. Believe me I know.Remember the old saying "To thine own self be true".
Finally, regarding the person who acts as an agent. Okay he gets 10% and your get 90%. Consider or ask how many people this agent represents. Perhaps it is ten or twenty actors or more.
Figure it out. He is doing pretty well.

Thank you Mary for you comments.
I agree with you that there are indeed things that we have no control but we can choose how we react to those things.
Agreed it does take more than one person to make a relationship work and we can only take responsibility for ourself in a relationship.
I too believe in moderation and yes it's always a struggle to make the best choices. Sometimes you do and sometimes you don't.
Agree about children as well. They have minds of there own. We can only plant seeds and model good behaviour.
I understand the agent is doing well and that doesn't bother me it's about you have to work the hardest for your own life and career.
Anyway thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts.
Best,
John
