Frank McCourt - Rest in Peace

I, like many Irish-Americans read all of Frank McCourt's books and watched the movie of Angela's Ashes and it broadened my understanding of his personal experience both in Ireland and in America. I enjoyed his writing and as I struggle to write my memoir I am inspired by him and by his writing. There is a quote by Frank McCourt that is so true not just of his life but so many of our lives especially in America. I know it is true for mine. Frank McCourt said "F. Scott Fitzgerald said there are no second acts in American lives. I think I've proven him wrong," So true. He taught English for thirty years, went on to write three books, win a Pulitzer Prize and see his book turned into a movie. What a life. I know he had more stories and books in him but he leaves us with a great legacy. Rest in Peace Frank McCourt, you will be missed but you enriched our lives by your contribution.........

Thought For Day - 45 Lessons

Written By Regina Brett, 90 years old, of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, "To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most-requested column I've ever written."

My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.

8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.

10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.

13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.

15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.

16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.

20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.

23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.

24. The most important sex organ is the brain.

25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?'

27. Always choose life.

28. Forgive everyone everything.

29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.

31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

33. Believe in miracles.

34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.

35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.

37. Your children get only one childhood.

38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.

41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

42. The best is yet to come.

43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

44. Yield.

45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift."

Remember that I will always share my spoon with you!

Friends are the family that we choose for ourselves.

Thought For Day - What the Mind Can Conceive

"Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe,

Thought For Day - Make a Difference In One Life

The Starfish
By: Author Unknown

An old man awoke just before sunrise, as he often did, to
walk by the ocean's edge and greet the new day. As he moved
through the morning dawn, he focused on a faint, far away
motion.

He saw a youth, bending and reaching and flailing arms,
dancing on the beach, no doubt in celebration of the
perfect day soon to begin. As the old man approached, he
realized that the youth was not dancing to the bay, but
rather bending to sift through the debris left by the
night's tide, stopping now and then to pick up starfish,
and then standing up to heave it back into the sea.

He asked the youth the purpose of the effort. "The tide
has washed the starfish onto the beach, and they cannot
return to the sea by themselves," the youth replied. "When
the sun rises, they will die unless I throw them back into
the sea."

The old man surveyed the vast expanse of beach that
stretched in both directions beyond eyesight. Starfish
littered the shore in numbers beyond calculation. The
hopelessness of the youth's plan became clear, and the old
man said, "But young man, don't you realize that there are
more starfish on this beach than you could ever save before
the sun is up? You cannot possibly expect to make a
difference!"

The youth paused briefly to consider the old man's words.
He then bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it
as far as possible into the sea. Turning to the old man, he
said, "I made a difference to that one!"

My American Dream - July 4th Independence Day

The American Dream is alive and well this 4th of July. My life is just one of many stories of the ongoing strength of the American Dream. I was born in St Francis Hospital in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx. I was the second and youngest son of two Irish immigrants who came to American in 1928 in search of a better life. My dad enlisted and served in WW II and made his own personal contribution to freedom and America.
I lived in the pictured apartment building - 400 E 141st St for eighteen years during the worse years the Bronx experienced. We were poor and got poorer when my dad died when I was four years old. My mother raised us and it's funny I never wanted for anything and didn't really realize how poor we were. I loved my neighborhood and I had a fun childhood with many good friends that I'm still in touch with to today. But life wasn't easy and I quit school when I was fifteen and it took me a long time to discover how to create a successful life. I had no successful role model. But I eventually figured it out and I did create a successful life and the opportunities were always there. I just needed to find them and put in the work to make it happen.

There are so many American success stories I could highlight today but because I grew up in the South Bronx I will just note some of the many Bronx success stories. You may be familiar with some or all of the following individuals who grew up in the Bronx and went on to create successful lives. They are all different and yet they have their Bronx roots, their participation and their contribution to the American Dream in common.

Colin Powell
Jennifer Lopez
Danny Aiello
Tony Curtis
John Patrick Shanley
Dion
Chazz Palminteri
Cuba Gooding Jr
Al Pacino
Sonia Sotomayer
Nate Tiny Archibald
Willie Colon
Regis Philbin
Geoffrey Canada
and many more......

There are also many, many others who while never becoming famous created successful lives, successful families and lived the American Dream. And to take off on an idea by Roger Simon, America and the American Dream wasn't just shaped by the great deeds of great men and women but was also shaped by the great deeds of ordinary men and women.

So today and in the future no matter how difficult things may appear or become let us not forget we all have been given a gift and we are blessed and we must make our contribution to make it even better. So this July 4th let's also celebrate the American Dream and continue to pass it on to the next generations.......

I Believe in Our America - Dr Nido Qubein

This 4th of July I share this interesting article by Dr Nido Qubein. I saw him speak once and was impressed by his story and his life. I just discovered Dr Qubein's speech and find it very inspiring.

Nido Qubein is the son of a Lebanese mother and a Jordanian father. He came to America when he was eighteen. His mother, told her children that being poor was a temporary condition. "You may be poor in your pocket," she often said, "but you can always be wealthy in your heart."

It’s hard to be anywhere these days without hearing the anguished voice of uncertainty in people all around us. Everyone, it seems, is talking about the bad economy and the financial markets. Everybody, it appears, is worried at some level.

To someone who is out of a job, life is difficult. The future seems uncertain. A good standard of living is less likely. It’s heartbreaking to see a family in need, a business in trouble, a country in constant debate about what to do, where to go, who to blame, and how to get back to normal again – soon.

Yes, these are scary times. They can test our faith. They can try our will. They can sow seeds of doubt. But, one thing I am absolutely sure of: these times cannot destroy our spirit. They cannot demolish our soul. They cannot confuse our brains. When things get tough, the tough must get going.

America has travelled down the path of adversity before. On lots of occasions. Really bad recessions and one atrocious depression – all within the last 80 years. People got hurt. Some were even wiped out. But life, somehow, miraculously went on. Our faith in God Almighty, our genuine support of each other, and our deep belief in the very fundamentals of our system of free enterprise helped us to march on. To hope for a better day. To try and try again. To refuse to be defeated. To allow ourselves to be disappointed but to never be discouraged.

I speak every day to our students and their families. I visit with friends in High Point and around our nation. This recession has touched everyone in different ways and at varying levels. It has touched us all. We may ache because we lost money, a job, an opportunity. But we also ache when we see friends and neighbors suffer in any way.

In spite of it all, I believe in our America. A resilient nation with hopeful people. An innovative country with unlimited possibilities. I chose to become an American. I am proud to be an American. I am grateful to be an American. I thank God every day for my good fortune. I love my country even when I know it is not perfect. I appreciate the privilege of work even when it comes cloaked in cumbersome and stressful clothing. I rise every morning knowing that my Lord won’t forsake any of us. That “this too shall pass.” That tomorrow will be better than yesterday. That recessions come and go but our beliefs and values are constant. That most people still have jobs now. Life still goes on. The sun still rises daily in the east.

At High Point University, we are proud to be patriotic. We are committed to our Christian faith. We strive every day to plant seeds of greatness in the hearts of hopeful students. It is clear to us that we cannot teach values, but we surely can model them with our attitudes, our actions, and our aspirations.

Let us all, dear friends, keep joy in our lives even when it seems difficult to do so. Let us climb the ladder of success even when failure tries to pull us down. Let us remember that we are created for a purpose – grander and better than any human can valuate. Our life cannot be measured by success; it must be measured by significance. And significance is never measured by fans, fame, or fortune. It is measured by commitment to our faith, dedication to our family, and loyalty to our friends.

Somehow, I believe better things lie ahead. Meanwhile, let us be positive when it’s easier to be pessimistic. Let us be faithful when it is simpler to be doubtful. Let us help each other when it seems more convenient to worry about ourselves. This is America. Land of the free and home of the brave. We cannot forsake our tradition and forget our legacy. We can only pray and hope and work and persist . . . and look forward to a rainbow that surely lies on the horizon.

Onwards we travel.

John Duffy's Success Tip # 15 - Master the 3 F's and the 1 C

"Master the 3 F's (Family, Fitness & Finances) and the 1 C ( Career) and you'll get an A in Life. And life will reward your efforts. So Just Do It !!!!!!

John Duffy

There are many things in life to master if you accept that mastering areas of life is up to you. And while there are other areas of life to master I would suggest that if you master these areas you will have a good or great life.

Start at home and master your relationships with your family. Strive to be the best and create the best relationship with the people you love the most and who love you the most. F = Family

Take on mastering your fitness and health for a long and productive life. Living a healthy life is key. Recognize that your body is your most important vehicle to get you through life so work to make it the best one. Create life long habits of exercise and movement and be careful of what you put in. Don't put sludge in the gas tank. F = Fitness

Now take on your finances and learn how to be the master of your finances and work towards creating financial freedom and independence. F = Finances

Lastly, create a career that you are passionate and if you are so lucky create a career that feels like play and that you would do for free. C = Career

Do all this and you get an A in life...... Go for it and May You Make Your Life a Masterpiece.

John Duffy's Success Tip # 14 - Understand Life Is Not Fair

" Understand Life Is Not Fair. So what, just more challenges to overcome. The stronger the wind the stronger the trees. Be Strong"

John Duffy

Life isn't fair! Say it again Life isn't Fair!!! Now depending on how lucky you are, yes lucky it might be less fair or more fair. Were you born in the 1st world or the 3rd world? Were you born into a poor family, a middle calls family or a wealthy family? Did you have loving supportive parents or abusive un-supportive parents, Were you born healthy or sickly? And the list goes on.

I was born into a very poor Irish immigrant family with parents with only a partial grammar school education. I was raised in the ghetto of the South Bronx. I dropped out of high school at fifteen. I didn't think life was fair at the time and I blamed others (the rich and the government) for our situation and at times I took on a victims mentality. It didn't help me to believe those things and it did nothing to make my life better.

Later I would begin to search deeper for answers to creating a more successful life. I came to realize the issue of whether life is fair is not the question I needed to ask but I needed to ask myself, given the reality of where i was starting out in life, what did I have to do to become successful no matter what obstacles life put in my path. Now that question got me busy taking actions that improved my life.

So I've come to realize "Life isn't Fair" but Life Is What It Is, and of course it's relative, it could be better but then again it could be worse and the important question is what am I going to do to make it better.

The same question faces you........

John Duffy's Success Tip # 13 - Go For Your Dreams

" Go For Your Dreams. No, I Mean Really Go For Them"

John Duffy

This is a tough one I know. Some folks have never figured out what their dreams are, some have let their dreams die, others have postponed them to "someday", and some are working towards them but keep losing focus and energy on the journey.

Few are pursuing their dreams with passion, energy, focus, obsession and drive.

Where do you fall in these categories?

I know I have fell in all of these categories at different times in my life. I aim to be in the last category most of the time but at times I find my self bouncing back and forth between working towards my dreams and truly pursuing them. I need to keep reminding myself of where I stand at the moment and where i need to be .

I encourage you to find a path to pursuing your dreams with passion and Really Go For Them......

Remember it's your life and your dreams. Don't sell yourself short.....
